Although she was born in Detroit, Lizzo spent an important part of her childhood in Houston, Texas, after moving there with her family at around age nine. Houston later played a major role in shaping her musical interests and performance style.

Real Name and Early Life

Lizzo’s real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson. Music became part of her life at a young age, particularly through the flute. She began playing the instrument while attending school and developed enough skill to eventually study music seriously.

Growing up in Houston also exposed her to freestyle rap and local hip-hop culture. Lizzo has credited the city with influencing her musical identity and has also named Beyoncé as one of her early inspirations.

Education

Lizzo attended the University of Houston, where she studied flute performance and played in the university’s Spirit of Houston Marching Band. Her background was therefore strongly rooted in classical music before she became known internationally for pop, R&B and hip-hop.

She eventually left university before completing her degree. During the difficult years that followed, Lizzo continued exploring singing and different musical styles while working toward a professional career.

Family

Lizzo was raised in a close family. Her mother is Shari Johnson-Jefferson, while her father was Michael Jefferson. Her father died when Lizzo was about 20, during a particularly difficult stage in her life.

She has spoken about being deeply affected by his death. Her father had also encouraged her musical ability, especially her talent for playing the flute.

Siblings

Lizzo is the youngest of three children. She has an older sister named Vanessa Jefferson and an older brother named Michael Jefferson.

Her siblings remained part of her support system even during her struggling years. Vogue reported that her mother and older siblings were available to support her during the period when she was living in her car while pursuing music.

Height and Appearance

Lizzo is commonly reported to stand around 5 feet 10 inches tall, or approximately 178 cm. She is widely recognised for expressive fashion choices, colourful stage outfits and a confident performance style.

Her public image has also included discussions about body confidence, self-image and personal acceptance. Over the years, she has spoken openly about learning to feel more comfortable with herself rather than following a single beauty standard.

Career Before Fame

Lizzo’s success did not happen overnight. After leaving university, she went through periods of financial difficulty and even lived in her car for a time while focusing on music.

She later moved to Minneapolis in 2011, where she became active in the local music scene. Her debut album, Lizzobangers, arrived in 2013, followed by Big Grrrl Small World in 2015.

Rise to Fame

Lizzo reached a much larger audience with Cuz I Love You in 2019. Songs including “Juice,” “Good as Hell” and “Truth Hurts” helped turn her into a mainstream star.

Although “Truth Hurts” had originally been released earlier, it later became a major commercial success. Lizzo’s mixture of singing, rapping, humour and flute performances helped give her a recognisable identity in contemporary pop music.

Awards

Lizzo has earned significant recognition from the Recording Academy. She currently has four Grammy Awards from 13 nominations.

Her Grammy wins include Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts,” Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jerome,” Best Progressive R&B Album for Cuz I Love You (Deluxe) and Record of the Year for “About Damn Time.”
